The new Victorian industry standard for civil construction, “A guide to managing safety”, is now the new guideline according to Allan Beacom the construction unit manager at WorkSafe’s workplace hazards and hazardous industries group.
This standard was developed after the Foundations for Safety Victoria Forum (FFSV) where the need for guidelines specifically for the civil construction industry was identified.
The existing guidelines were more focused on areas like housing and general construction and were not detailed enough for civil construction and a working group was formed to revise them.
Civil construction covers a wider spectrum of activities such as trenching and other excavation works, and maintenance of infrastructure such as footpaths, bridges, roads, tramways and bike paths.
This new standard will be used by WorkSafe inspectors when they are deciding whether employers are establishing and monitoring safe workplaces in the civil construction field.
