WA Prison Officers Concerned After Three Injured in Brawl

Three WA prison officers were injured when they were trying to break up a fight among inmates last weekend. The WA Prison Officers Union has said that the state government is not doing enough to ensure the safety of their members.

All three of the officers required medical attention after the incident.

The incident happened at a regional prison near Geraldton and the union’s secretary John Welch said that overcrowding at the prison is an issue and called on the state government to act.

He added that there are clearly risks for the union members with a shortage of staff as well as current prison overcrowding and that officers need to be paid fair wages to attract people to the role.

The state government responded that the prison where the incident occurred is not overcrowded and that the current EBA is not due to be replaced until June 2013.
