Safe Work Australia works on new WHS tool kit for volunteers

A new tool kit which aims to provide accessible information to volunteer organisations covered by the new Work Health and Safety laws is currently being developed by Safe Work Australia and the Volunteering Working Group.

The new volunteer kit will help minimise red tape by showing volunteers how to comply with the laws. It will include information on different topics on work health and safety and will provide materials like handouts and a power point presentation.

The kit will include information on:

  • the duties of volunteers and volunteer organisations under the new WHS laws
  • training and consultation
  • representation and notification requirements
  • duties of volunteer officers

This new tool kit is considered a new positive step toward clarifying the protective nature of the WHS laws for volunteers.  The kit will be available later this year.

More information on volunteers and the WHS laws can be accessed through the Safe Work Australia Volunteer Assistance Package.
