Reforms to workers compensation benefits confirmed

WorkCover reforms introduced on Tuesday will ensure better protection for injured workers. This is according to Minister for Finance and Services, Greg Pearce.

According to Mr Pearce, the reforms will guarantee that injured workers get the treatment they need to return to the workforce, while making sure that those unable to return to work are cared for in the future.

“The Government has a clear focus to ensure the scheme gets back to meeting its key aims – supporting injured workers through rehabilitation, getting them back to work, and remaining financially sustainable,” said Mr Pearce.

“The workers’ compensation scheme has been costing the state up to $ 9 million a day and it’s time to put the plan for recovery in action.

“Its $ 4 billion deficit is spiralling out of control and we simply cannot afford to wait around.

“The reality is without these reforms NSW businesses were facing premium hikes of up to 28 percent, an increase which would stall economic growth and job creation.

“NSW businesses are already paying up to 60 percent more in premiums than their interstate counterparts and any rise would have further threatened jobs – we refuse to stand back and let this happen,” said Mr Pearce.

“The government is determined that we will have the best possible scheme to support injured workers and we also want to ensure the scheme is financially sustainable.”

He confirmed that no changes will be made to compensation for police officers injured on the job. They will still be entitled to benefits under the Police Death and Disability Scheme.

He also thanked the members of the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee for examination for their efforts.

Details of the proposed reforms can be accessed through the NSW WorkCover website.
