NSW: Firefighters Protest Against WorkCover Changes

Firefighters in Sydney, the Illawarra and the Hunter will stop work today, during which time major fire stations might be unstaffed for the first time since 1956.

With the state government’s WorkCover changes expected to have passed the upper house some time last night, Fire Brigade Employees’ Union members are stopping work at 10am

They will vote on whether to strike from 1pm for the rest of the day.

The government’s bid to rein in WorkCover’s deficit of more than $ 4 billion passed through the lower house late on Tuesday night.

The union’s state secretary Jim Casey said there was “every chance” of fire stations being unstaffed across NSW.

“For the first time since 1956, we’ll have done a full walk out,” he said.

On Twitter, Mr Casey said: “Things about to get moody with O’Farrell Workers Comp attacks – firefighters set to strike tomorrow.”

Unions have disputed Premier Barry O’Farrell’s claims the changes won’t be retrospective, arguing workers with existing claims will be affected by the compensation overhaul.
